Official lookup and assistance
Open the official ClassIT+ website for product information and authorized access. For an unclear classification, NMFTA’s current guidance links to its interpretations team.

1. Gather the details that identify the freight
Write down what the product actually is, what it is made of, its construction and how it will be packaged. NMFTA says photographs, dimensions, construction details and typical packaging help its classification team interpret a shipment.
A description such as “merchandise” leaves those questions unanswered. Separate the product from its shipping package: “cabinet” describes goods; “wooden crate” describes how they are prepared. The pallet shipping guide covers preparation before measurements are finalized.
- Product identity
- Specific description, material, construction and relevant product specifications.
- Shipping condition
- Assembled or disassembled condition, package type, palletization and protection.
- Finished measurements
- Outside dimensions, gross weight and quantity of each distinct handling unit.
- Supporting record
- Photographs and the documents that connect those details to the actual shipment.
2. Search official provisions or request confirmation
The public ClassIT+ product page describes searches by keywords and product attributes, plus filtering by effective date. NMFTA names it as the official digital source for current NMFC data. Use the applicable description and provisions rather than choosing a result solely because its class seems favorable.
If you rely on a carrier or freight provider, supply the same details and ask which item and subprovision apply to that shipment. XPO describes ClassIT+ integration in its customer site; other providers may offer different access. Confirm what is available under your account or arrangement.
3. Read the scope, packaging and effective provisions
The item needs to match the goods and shipping condition. The NMFC explanation distinguishes that provision from the resulting class. NMFTA says the standard continues to evolve, so a previous shipment’s item is not proof that the same entry applies today.
Check the currently applicable content and any changes affecting your shipment. If the description or packaging remains ambiguous, request interpretation with supporting details. A density chart cannot resolve a question about what commodity provision applies.
4. Confirm density using the finished load
Measure after packing. For example, imagine an assembled display cabinet with glass doors, protected inside a crate. Its outside shipping dimensions are 48 × 40 × 60 in and its gross weight is 260 lb.
Density = 260 ÷ 66.666… = 3.9 lb/ft³
That hypothetical calculation describes weight per occupied space. It does not tell us the cabinet’s applicable item, packaging provisions or final class. The product and package details are still needed. Use the freight class calculator for a density estimate and the measurement guide to check its inputs.
What a separate density check can establish
- Length
- 48 in
- Width
- 40 in
- Height
- 48 in
This numerical estimate still needs the applicable item provision. 53.333 ft³, 500 lb gross, 9.375 lb/ft³; density-scale class 100.
5. Keep the confirmation with the shipment record
Record the applicable item and subprovision, class, source or carrier confirmation, date checked and measurements used. Make sure the quote and bill of lading describe the actual shipment. XPO’s public guidance calls for accurate commodity description, item/sub, class or density and weight.
If an invoice later changes those details, compare the evidence rather than simply submitting the old entry again. The reclassification guide explains how to prepare a review. For service questions beyond classification, see how LTL works and accessorial definitions.
Questions before you ship
Where can I look up an NMFC code?
NMFTA identifies ClassIT+ as its official digital source for current NMFC items, density scales and rule updates. Use authorized access or ask your carrier or freight provider to confirm the applicable item and subprovision. This site explains the process and does not reproduce the licensed item database.
Can I find an NMFC item from weight and dimensions?
Those inputs determine density, not the identity of the goods or the applicable commodity provision. Collect the product description, construction, packaging and other relevant details, then confirm the current item.
Is NMFC lookup free?
ClassIT+ has public product information and access plans; the classification database requires authorized access. Some carriers provide classification tools to their customers. Check the access available through your provider; this guide does not promise a free universal item lookup.
Can I reuse an item from an old bill of lading?
An old bill of lading is a reference to investigate. Check that it describes the same goods and packaging, and confirm the currently applicable item and effective provisions. NMFTA says classification continues to evolve.
