Freight class 65
A class 65 unit can disappear inside a misleading shipment average.
22.5 to under 30 lb/ft³
The lower boundary of 22.5 lb/ft³ is included. Exactly 30 lb/ft³ enters class 60.

Where this class 65 example sits
Toward class 70: 24 − 22.5 = 1.5 lb/ft³ above the cutoff. The lower edge remains included. Toward class 60: 30 − 24 = 6 lb/ft³ to the next boundary.
One dense unit and one lighter unit with the same dimensions
A finished 48 × 40 × 24 in handling unit weighing 640 lb has a density of 24 lb/ft³: class 65. A second unit with the same dimensions but only 320 lb has a density of 12 lb/ft³: class 85.
Together they weigh 960 lb and occupy about 53.333 ft³. The combined density is 18 lb/ft³, which maps to class 70. That average describes the combined arithmetic; it does not make the two individual units class 70 or resolve how unlike items must be documented.
| Scenario | Quantity × L × W × H; weight per unit | Total volume | Density | Class |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 640 lb handling unit | 1 × 48 × 40 × 24 in at 640 lb each | 26.667 ft³ | 24 lb/ft³ | 65 |
| 320 lb handling unit | 1 × 48 × 40 × 24 in at 320 lb each | 26.667 ft³ | 12 lb/ft³ | 85 |
| Both units combined | 1 × 48 × 40 × 24 in at 640 lb each1 × 48 × 40 × 24 in at 320 lb each | 53.333 ft³ | 18 lb/ft³ | 70 |

Retain measurements for each different group
Use separate calculator rows when the packaged dimensions or per-piece weights differ. This keeps the group estimates visible beside the combined result and makes a mismatch easier to explain.
For the 48 × 40 × 24 in envelope, the class 65 interval begins at 600 lb and ends just below 800 lb. The 640 lb example is inside that interval, while the second 320 lb unit is not. Ask the carrier how each applicable item or handling unit must be rated.
Change the 640 lb unit, not its shipment average
A 19.2-inch envelope at the original footprint reaches 30 lb/ft³ and class 60. Recalculate the separate 320 lb unit using its own measurements; the denser target does not reclassify it.
| Boundary density | Target volume | Total height | Class at boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 lb/ft³ | 21.333 ft³ | 19.2 in | 60 |

Questions before you ship
Can I average class 65 and class 85 to get class 75?
No. Class labels are not numbers to average. Calculate total weight divided by total volume if you need combined density, and preserve separate item or handling-unit details for the actual classification decision.
